  • 06/2019: I will speak and serve in the panel in the ICWSM 2019 Workshop on Complex Systems Perspectives on Algorithmic Bias
  • 05/2019: I will visit TU Delft to give a lecture at Delft Design for Values on Credibility Assessment of Social Media, as well as a workshop on designing for credibility
  • 10/2018: My new lecture Complexity Science at TU Graz will start. Looking forward to teaching this exciting subject to my students!
  • 10/2018: I was invited to speak at the Passauer Data Science summit (PasDas) 2018. I spoke about modeling user behavior in recommender systems with psychology-inspired approaches
  • 09/2018: I will be one of the panelists on Open Science policies at the H2020 OpenUp final conference in Brussels
  • 05/2018: I will speak at the ERC Executive Agency workshop in Brussels about measuring scientific impact using citations and altmetrics
  • 05/2018: I will present our Recommender System research at the Google DNIengage Event in Vienna, organized by the Styria Media Group.
  • 04:2018: I was at The Web Conference (rebranded WWW) in Lyon and it was fantastic! I presented in the workshop on Scholarly Communication, I sat in the panel in the International Projects track and we presented recent work on an online study of our cognitive-inspired recommender systems.
  • 03-07/2018: Check out my lecture Web Science at TU Graz, which I teach together with Prof. Denis Helic from TU Graz. This year, I will introduce new lecture units on Agent-based models, Opinion Dynamics, Culture and Language Dynamics!
  • 03/2018: Our grant proposal for the FFG K1 Comet Center Know-Center was accepted, I was responsible for the strategic research plan and the financial plan with industry partners for my Social Computing research area
  • 02/2018: I will speak about our work on opinion dynamics at the workshop on Social Informatics @ the Complexity Hub in Vienna
  • 01/2018: I will give an invited talk at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology at the Institute of Applied Informatics and Formal Description Methods on our recent research on recommender systems and opinion dynamics
  • 12/2017: Our paper Beyond Accuracy Optimization: On the Value of Item Embeddings for Student Job Recommendations” has been accepted at the IFUP workshop co-located with WSDM 2018 – this is joint work with the Austrian start-up Moshbit
  • 12/2017: Our paper “Zenodo in the spotlight of traditional and new metrics” has been accepted for publication at Frontiers in Research Metrics & Analytics, link to publication follows
  • 11/2017: I will join the Chair for Computational Social Sciences and Humanities at RWTH Aachen as visiting researcher to work with Prof. Dr. Markus Strohmaier and his group on biases and recommender systems (until Feb 2018)
  • 10/2017: My PhD students Dominik Kowald and Simone Kopeinik successfully defended their thesis – both researched on cognitive inspired recommender systems and both passed with honours :)
  • 10/2017: My team is growing :) We welcome Tony Ross-Hellauer to the team, he’ll be a PostDoc in our group working on Open Science and Open Peer review
  • 09/2017: I am once again Senior PC member at AMC IUI’18 – such a great conference :)
  • 07/2017: Our LBR paper “Tailoring Recommendations for a Multi-Domain Setting” has been accepted at the RecSysKLT workshop, co-located with RecSys 2017!

  • 03/2017 09/2016: My PhD student Simone Kopeinik successfully presented a full paper on an online study of Recommender Systems in an inquiry based learning setting at LAK 2017 in Vancouver
  • 01/2017: Our paper Temporal Effects on Hashtag Reuse in Twitter: A Cognitive-Inspired Hashtag Recommendation Approach has been accepted as full paper at WWW 2017
  • 12/2016: Ilire Hasani-Mavriqi, PhD student in my team, presented our work on semantic stability, joint work with Markus Strohmaier from GESIS at Complex Networks and Applications in Milan, Italy.

  • 09/2016: My PhD student Simone Kopeinik successfully presented a full paper on Recommender Systems in Learning at the EC-TEL 2016 conference in Lyon
  • 08/2016: Our article on consensus dynamics in collaboration networks has been accepted to the Social Network Analysis and Mining journal. We studied the impact of social status and network structure on the consensus building process in empirical online collaboration networks, here is a link to the Open Access publication.
  • 07/2016: My PhD students Dominik Kowald and Emanuel Lacic successfully presented 3 papers at the ACM Hypertext Conference in Halifax, Canada. Emanuel presented his PhD work in the joint UMAP/Hypertext doctoral consortium. Both were lucky to receive an ACM SIGWEB Student Travel Grant!

  • 06/2017: I was invited to join the senior programme committee of the 22nd ACM International Conference on Intelligent User Interfaces (IUI 2017) – it’s going to be an exciting event, consider submitting a paper!
  • 06/2016: Two papers accepted at the European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning (EC-TEL 2016), one is on Recommender Systems in Learning and the other one, Take up my Tags, reports on a social tagging field study, which we carried out in the context of the Learning Layers project.

  • 02/2016: I’ll give a keynote at DIDACTA 2016 in Cologne with the title: Data driven business:  The Impact of (Open) Data on Education and Research.
  • 01/2016: I have been appointed by the European Commission as one of six members of the Expert Group on Altmetrics. This group has been set up by the European Commission’s Directorate General Research and Innovation to propose suggestions for alternative systems to evaluate scientific work apart from quantitative citation-based impact factor
  • 01/2016: Our H2020 GARRI proposal OpenUp (OPENing UP new methods, indicators and tools for peer review, impact measurement and dissemination of research results) got accepted as the only funded project in the call. We will come up with recommendations how to disseminate research results beyond the traditional academic outlets and we will contribute to the open peer review and altmetrics research.

  • 08/2015: We got a H2020 research grant for our project AFEL (Analytics for Everyday Learning), in which we aim to study learning activities in online learning systems. My colleague Vedran Sabol from Know-Center will work on novel visual analytics tools for learning analytics and my colleague Nina Simon will lead the dissemination and exploitation work package.   • 09/2015: We won a Special Mention Award at EC-TEL 2015 for our demo “KnowBrain: An Online Social Knowledge Repository for Informal Workplace Learning”.
